Attend games of your feeder teams. Seeing you in the stands will let them know that you are interested in them and will give you a chance to monitor the culture that has been established. Build good lines of communication with the coaches in your feeder system.
To set this up, we will abandon the 4-out set and have O4 move inside to the low block opposite O5 (diagram 21). O3 will move up and we now have a two-guard front. O2 will work along the baseline, using screens from O5 and O4, cutting out to either side.
The main goals of your feeder system should be to develop players who are fundamentally sound, play and practice with great effort, and have high basketball IQs. If you tell a varsity coach he or she will welcome players in their program each year who have those three traits, most would be ecstatic.
Use this offense if you have two good, solid post players. We will tweak this basic offense from season to season with special plays for our better scorers. If we have a strong shooting guard O2, we will use some of the 2-series plays. With a good point guard, we'll pick a play from the 1-series.
As a positionless offense, I highly recommend the 5-out motion offense for all youth basketball teams since it allows all players on the team to develop into well-rounded basketball players. This is important because it’s impossible to know which players will grow in height and which players won’t.
