In 991 Ealdorman Brihtnoth was killed at the famous battle of Maldon in Essex by a Viking host under Olaf Tryggvason, a Norwegian who returned to plunder the north-east in 993. The next year, he and Swein Forkbeard, the Danish king, attacked London together unsuccessfully.
After Sweyn died in 1014, Æthelred returned to the throne, but he died just two years later. Æthelred's 37-year combined reign was the longest of any Anglo-Saxon English king and was only surpassed in the 13th century, by Henry III.

Despite Æthelred’s efforts to protect England, he was briefly ousted by the Danish king Sweyn. After a triumphant return and brief second reign, Æthelred was nearly replaced again, this time by Cnut. He died in 1016, controlling only London. Scandinavians recounted Æthelred’s reign in their own ways.
