The soil lime index value is the key to measuring the pool of reserve acidity. A buffer solution of standardized pH and strength is reacted with the soil. Acid-forming ions (primarily aluminum) held in reserve on exchange sites are forced into solution by mass exchange and are neutralized by the buffer.

1.1 SCOPE. This course covers laboratory test procedures, typical test properties, and the application of test results to design and construction.
Hill Labs has organised its soil tests into two groups. The first, the Basic Soil test, includes components of significance across all applications: • pH • Phosphorus • The Cations: Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium and Sodium • Cation Exchange Capacity and Base Saturation • Volume Weight
Soil and plant testing is considered to be the most effective and reliable tool to assess plant nutrient demand in-situ or on-site. The practices of site-specific nutrient management, best fertilizers management practices, 4R nutrient stewardship, nutrient expert based recommendations etc. are based on testing/analysis of soil and plant parts.
Use proper sampling tools. Sampling can be made with a soil auger, soil tube, or spade. The desired depth for cropland is plow depth (6-8 inches or more), and 2-4 inches for pastureland, or no-till crop fields. Place sample in clean container. Mix well in a clean plastic pail.
