It continues to both challenge and inspire anthropologists, shifting in meaning and application with theoretical trends and across the subdisciplines.
Ethnocentrism in social science and anthropology —as well as in colloquial English discourse—means to apply one's own culture or ethnicity as a frame of reference to judge other cultures, practices, behaviors, beliefs, and people, instead of using the standards of the particular culture involved.
Ethnocentrism is one of several subclasses of sociocentrism, which, as the name implies, is a central focus around one’s own society. Other subclasses include nationalism, class sociocentrism, and specific heritage-focused attitudes like Eurocentrism or Afrocentrism.
Ethnocentrism is reconceptualized as a strong sense of ethnic group self-centeredness, which involves intergroup expressions of ethnic group preference, superiority, purity, and exploitativeness, and intragroup expressions of ethnic group cohesion and devotion.
