Ethylene glycol poisoning can cause dysrhythmias and heart failure. Ethylene glycol toxicity is characterized by an osmolal gap and metabolic acidosis with an elevated anion gap. Nephrotoxicity after ethylene glycol ingestion typically occurs 24-72 hours after acute exposure.
26 Σεπ 2022 · Ethylene glycol exposure can be extremely dangerous, with significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, sweet-tasting liquid commonly found in antifreeze but occasionally used for other purposes, such as industrial solvents.
Ethylene glycol poisoning is poisoning caused by drinking ethylene glycol. [1] Early symptoms include intoxication, vomiting and abdominal pain. [1] Later symptoms may include a decreased level of consciousness, headache, and seizures. [1] Long term outcomes may include kidney failure and brain damage. [1]
Biomarkers of effects exist for ethylene glycol poisoning, but none are specific to ethylene glycol. These include clinical manifestations of nervous system, cardiopulmonary toxicity, renal toxicity, and laboratory findings of metabolic acidosis and calcium oxalate crystalluria.
The vast majority of information relating to the toxicity of ethylene glycol is from studies of oral exposure. Information on the health effects of oral exposure in humans is largely limited to case reports of acute accidental or intentional ingestion of ethylene glycol.
The toxicity of ethylene glycol can be divided into three phases: early toxicity, 30 min–12 h, a central nervous system depressant phase can be noticed with stupor, nausea, vomiting and seizures. Later, 12–24 h after intoxication, a cardiorespiratory phase appears with onset of tachypnoea (compensate for systemic acidosis), hypotension or ...
2 Ιαν 2023 · The first symptom of ethylene glycol ingestion is similar to the feeling caused by drinking alcohol (ethanol). Within a few hours, more toxic effects become apparent. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, convulsions, stupor (decreased level of alertness), or even coma.
