The Commission tabled the announced proposal for a revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directives on 26 October 2022, as part of a wider legislative package also covering water pollution. The proposal would merge the two existing directives into a single one (recast).

Air pollution has decreased over the last decades in the EU, as a result of EU clean air legislation and joint action taken by the EU and national, regional and local authorities. Yet air quality remains a serious concern for European citizens 1 .
The Ambient Air Quality Directives set EU air quality standards for 12 air pollutants: sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide / nitrogen oxides, particulate matter (PM 10, PM 2.5), ozone, benzene, lead, carbon monoxide, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, and benzo (a)pyrene.
Highlights that methane emissions are not regulated under EU air pollution legislation, and not specifically regulated under EU climate policy; welcomes the recently published ‘EU strategy to reduce methane emissions’, and encourages the Commission to effectively address the need to minimise methane emissions, especially from agriculture ...
