In music history, we use this term to refer to a specific type of Western art music, namely the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The time during which these composers were active is what we call the Classical Period. Music of this era is obsessed with structural clarity, balance, and form.
Students are encouraged to listen to several examples of each style at online sources available through Classical Music.net, Naxos, or other online sites and to listen for the characteristics given below. The course is intended to introduce students to the academic study of music, including music analysis and the historical and sociocultural issues regarding music of that period.
