For example, the 25th percentile (Q1) of annual income in a certain country may be $15,000 per year and the 75th percentile (Q3) may be $120,000 per year. The interquartile range (IQR) would be calculated as $120,000 – $15,000 = $105,000.
An outlier is defined as being any point of data that lies over 1.5 IQRs below the first quartile (Q 1) or above the third quartile (Q 3)in a data set. High = (Q 3) + 1.5 IQR Low = (Q 1) – 1.5 IQR.
