Have they noticed small red spots (petechiae) or purple patches (purpura) with the bruises? Is bruising spontaneous or inflicted by trauma? Is the severity out of proportion to the trauma?
Excessive bruising, epistaxis, bleeding after dental extraction, and menorrhagia are symptoms suggestive of quantitative or qualitative platelet disorders.8 Pa-tients with platelet abnormalities may also experience excessive bleeding after hemostatic challenges.15 The presence of petechiae in particular suggests a platelet defect.
