11 Οκτ 2019 · Summary. From the outset of the Civil War, the importance of the Mississippi River as a line of supply and communications and a military operations corridor was apparent to all on both sides of the Mason–Dixon line.
The initial campaign to capture Vicksburg began with the ascent of Union ships up the river from the Gulf. Commanded by David Farragut, the fleet captured New Orleans and further upriver took Baton Rouge and Natchez without firing a shot.
