Specific thresholds for ferritin are used to detect iron deficiency and overload in different age groups. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 42% of children less than 5 years of age and 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anaemic.
9 Δεκ 2023 · In terms of screening recommendations, five guidelines recommend screening with ferritin in addition to a full blood count in pregnancy, two recommend selective screening with ferritin for at risk groups only, and one guideline suggests using ferritin where feasible.
24 Ιαν 2020 · Overall, serum ferritin, if available, should be used in conjunction with hemoglobin concentration to more precisely define iron status in pregnancy. 42. Other iron biomarkers show promise in refining the diagnosis of iron deficiency in pregnant women.
23 Φεβ 2017 · Ferritin reflects total body iron stores. Iron deficiency is the only clinical situation associated with extremely low values of ferritin. Ferritin declines gradually during pregnancy, reaches a nadir during weeks 35 to 38, and increases during the month before delivery.
If serum-ferritin is already low at conception 41 an initial serum ferritin surge is not seen (superfluous), and ferritin remains low for the entire pregnancy. A dramatic example of ferritin oscillation is evident following intravenous iron administration.
12 Ιουλ 2021 · Most pregnant women with moderate to severe iron-deficiency anemia have an iron deficit of 1000 mg or more, but the calculation of total body iron deficit (bodyweight in kg×[target hemoglobin level – actual hemoglobin level in g/dL]×2.45) can help determine the exact need.
