The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects (benefits and harms) of two commonly-used conservative interventions: the figure-of-eight bandage versus the arm sling as treatments of middle-third clavicle fractures.

Fractures of the clavicle (collar bone) are common and this question comes up often. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. To the best of our knowledge, there is very little scientific evidence to support one over the other -- or even to suggest immobilization over doing nothing is better.

With better pain relief, faster functional recovery, fewer union related complications and overall better patient compliance, we found broad arm sling to be a better modality of conservative management of middle third clavicle fractures, and thus strongly advocate its use over figure of 8 brace.
