The wool itself is excellent, and I use my plain vest as mid layer a big part of the winter, it's warm and tough and really comfortable - for me it has been a good purchase. The western vest costs a lot more, and the difference is styling and pocket layout, so whether it's worth the price difference is very much a matter of opinion.
22 Δεκ 2012 · The Filson vests are great for layering because they're very warm yet much less bulky than a down vest. I've got a Filson western-style Mackinaw vest that I layer beneath my Johnson Leathers M-8002 hip-length car coat.

€395. A Western-style vest made of 100% virgin Mackinaw Wool. Colour: FOREST GREEN. Size: No size selected. XS S M L XL XXL. Fit: Relaxed fit allows room for midweight layers underneath. All Filson sizes are US sizes which can be larger for a European stature, so we recommend sizing down.
I'm in the market for a Mackinaw wool vest, but I'm not sure which one I'll end up getting. A large part will depend on what the local importer stocks this season, so I'd like to familiarize myself with all three that Filson offers: the wool vest liner, the western vest, and the plain ol' wool vest. I'm about 179cm (5'11") and 72kg (160lbs).
22 Δεκ 2012 · I have four of the Filson vests: one brown moleskin zip up liner that I use with my Filson Weekender jacket; one navy blue button up moleskin; one brown and one charcoal 24 oz. Mackinaw button up vests. The latter the three vests can be worn with slacks/tie/sports coat to work on cold days.
