22 Δεκ 2012 · The Filson vests are great for layering because they're very warm yet much less bulky than a down vest. I've got a Filson western-style Mackinaw vest that I layer beneath my Johnson Leathers M-8002 hip-length car coat. It works very well for that, even though the vest has a collar.

17 Αυγ 2018 · I own quite a few pieces from Filson and the Mackinaw wool vest is the most versatile piece IMHO. I own the classic V-neck vest, not the Western one. It makes it really easy to layer with and avoids the itchy neck issue.
The wool itself is excellent, and I use my plain vest as mid layer a big part of the winter, it's warm and tough and really comfortable - for me it has been a good purchase. The western vest costs a lot more, and the difference is styling and pocket layout, so whether it's worth the price difference is very much a matter of opinion.
