Cats with FLUTD usually show one or more of the following signs: • difficulty and pain when passing urine. • passing urine more frequently. • passing only small amounts of urine. • passing urine in inappropriate places. • straining before, during or after urination. • passing bloody urine. • crying when passing urine.
Urinary crystals and bladder stones (calculi) are found in many cats with FLUTD. The two most common types of urinary crystals found in cats are struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) and calcium oxalate. In cats it is very common for crystals to develop without stones forming.

What is Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)? FLUTD is a term used to describe different diseases that cause inflammation or irritation to the bladder. These conditions can range from mild to severe. Sometimes a cause is relatively easy to identify, such as infection.
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease, or FLUTD, refers to any of the many possible underlying conditions causing the symptoms. Given the myriad of potential underlying conditions, it is essential to determine the cause of FLUTD to determine how best to treat the kitty.

Cats with FLUTD usually present with signs of dysuria (difficult urination), pollakiuria (increased frequency of urination), haematuria, agitation or vocalisation (crying or howling) when trying to urinate, urethral obstruction, and/or periuria (inappropriate urination).
