Box 6 shows points you or the seller paid this year for the purchase of your principal residence that are required to be reported to you. Generally, these points are fully deductible in the year paid, but you must subtract seller-paid points from the basis of your residence. Other points not reported in box 6 may also be deductible.

Report on Form 1098 points that meet all the following conditions. They are clearly designated on the Settlement Statement (Form HUD-1) or HUD Closing Disclosure as points; for example, “loan origination fee” (including amounts for VA and FHA loans), “loan discount,” “discount points,” or “points.”.
Enter data for Form 1098. When you enter data in Form 1099 data entry, you can refer to the following table, which lists each box on form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement and specifies where that data can be found or entered in.
