Formacresol is a mixture consisting of formalin, cresol and glycerine used in dentistry. Formocresol has been used in dentistry for over 100 years, and for vital pulpotomy in primary teeth for over 80 years. Its efficacy has been extensively studied, with clinical success rates ranging from 70% to 100%, making it the standard against which newer techniques are compared.
A commercial solution containing 19% formaldehyde, 35% cresol in a glycerine/water vehicle (Buckley's formocresol, Cosby laboratories, Burbank, CA, USA), was later developed as a suitable medicament for the treatment of pulpally exposed primary teeth.
Formocresol was introduced to treat non-vital permanent teeth in the United States by Buckley in 1904. In 1930, Sweet introduced the formocresol pulpotomy technique. Formocresol has subsequently become a popular pulpotomy medicament for primary teeth. Initially, the technique involved five visits.
