Formaldehyde and its products have been widely used in endodontic procedures as intracanal medicaments. Formocresol has gained popularity in pediatric dentistry as pulpotomy medicament. The very nature of formocresol is to fix the soft tissues when exposed.
Formocresol has been used in dentistry since 100 years. The biologic approach to pediatric pulp therapy is either devitalization approach of formocresol pulptomy or pulpectomy. Formocresol was introduced to treat non-vital permanent teeth in the United States by Buckley in 1904. In 1930, Sweet introduced the formocresol pulpotomy
This in vivo study aimed to assess and compare the relative clinical and radiographic success of formocresol, glutaraldehyde and ferric sulphate as medicaments following pulpotomies in primary molars at three-monthly intervals over one year. The study was carried out on 90 primary molars in 54 children aged from 3 to 9 years.
