For an understanding of the pre- and proto-historical Frisians and their archaeological traces, we first consider the changing landscape that they inhabited.

Etymology. The contemporary name for the region stems from Latin Frisii, an ethnonym used for a group of ancient tribes in modern-day Northwestern Germany, possibly being a loanword of Proto-Germanic * frisaz, meaning "curly, crisp", presumably referring to the hair of the tribesmen.
Frisian dates back as far as the Early Middle Ages. It began to become a language distinct from other North Sea Germanic languages, such as Old English. During the High Middle Ages, Old Frisian was used as a written language (e.g. in legal texts) and as the official regional language.
