Definition. Functional capacity refers to one’s ability to perform the activities and tasks necessary to live independently. These tasks change throughout the life span; children, adults, and the elderly each have their own unique set of activities necessary to maintain their independence.
We will first define the functional capacity evaluation (FCE) and explore the different types available as well as their uses. We will review several studies exploring the validity and reliability of the FCE on healthy and chronic pain patients.
