The Louisiana State Police Training Academy provides basic training for State Police cadets and continuing training for troopers through quarterly firearms training and annual in-service training. The Academy also provides continuing education training for other law enforcement agencies as well as DPS non-commissioned personnel.

Military police officers stationed in Louisiana are eligible for certification if they successfully complete a basic training course prescribed for peace officers and pass the POST statewide examination.
If an Officer is already POST certified in the state of Louisiana, they are required to complete the FTO program with a minimum of 160 training hours. The Louisiana Trooper Foundation supports training programs for the State Police, as well as, other Louisiana Law Enforcement Agencies through tuition and financial assistance. One of the programs is the Northwestern University School of Staff and Command which is a ten week accredited course.
