I am currently on week 3 of active pills and will start my placebo week tomorrow. However, two days ago I started getting light brown discharge that has slowly gotten heavier and today I started getting red blood as well as brown.
The placebo week is when you “should” normally get your period, though your period may not line up perfectly with the placebo pills. For instance, your period may start on the 3rd or 4th placebo pill day and may last through the first couple days of the new pill pack.
In order to prevent unscheduled bleeding when skipping periods, it’s a good idea to take a break from the active pills for 4-7 days every 2-3 months and get a period. Have you started any new medications or supplements? Some medications may interact with birth control to make spotting more likely.

These offer women four periods a year and skip placebo week by using the 21 or 28-day packs of pills. Whenever a woman uses birth control, it is also common to bleed outside of the placebo week.
