The test is done in two steps and checks a pregnant person's response to glucose (sugar). High glucose levels in the blood may indicate that you are at risk for or have gestational diabetes.
Health and Human Development (NICHD) recommend screening all pregnant women for gestational diabetes with a two-step approach using a 50gm glucose challenge test (GCT) as a screen at 24-28 weeks followed by a diagnostic 100gm 3hr glucose tolerance test (GTT)5,6 if GCT results exceed a predetermined institutional threshold (typically 130-140mg/dL).
