Goldrush! If there is anything that changed the course of the population of the western United States, it was the Gold Rush of 1848 to 1855. Before this time migration to the west had been slow and due to the hardships, only for those that could withstand the difficulties.
On January 24, 1848, carpenter James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill, a sawmill on the American River in Coloma, California. This news quickly spread across the country and around the world, igniting the California Gold Rush.
The Gold Rush. In 1848, James Wilson Marshall, a carpenter from New Jersey, found flakes of gold in a river near Sacramento, California. He was building a saw mill for John Sutter.
