Don't be afraid to ask other users about improving, as mostly they will be nice and share you a pretty fun map to play that they also enjoyed, where their osu! world adventure begun. If you want to climb ranking I would try out some of the most played beatmaps on the website. If you want fun play the top rated beatmaps, or you can do what I do and mass download beatmaps and try them all, put the ones I really like or want to farm in a collection.
If you're a beginner you should stick to maps that are around 2 stars or so. Just try out different beatmaps and see what difficulty you can handle. Most beginner maps are pretty similar so I would recommend looking up your favourite songs on the website (search using the "beatmap" field at the top).
This is a song list export of my current osu!lazer install, and it features a bunch of ranked and loved mapsets ranging from 2007 to 2021 + a couple unranked mapsets (I think like 10 or something) + also the long stream practice maps by onlyforyou.
