Foreign direct investment (FDI) flows is the value of cross-border transactions related to direct investment over time. FDI is when an investor resident in one economy establishes a lasting interest in and a significant degree of influence over an enterprise resident in another economy.
In 2022, global foreign direct investment (FDI foreign direct investment) flows experienced a 12.4 per cent decline, amounting to $1.3 trillion. This decline was mostly in developed economies, where FDI foreign direct investment fell by 36.7 per cent to $378 billion.

FDI as a ratio to gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) rose from 4.3 per cent in 2020 to 7.1 per cent in 2021.
