To predict the electron configuration for an atom’s ground state, the lowest energy state for an atom, electrons are put into the orbitals with the lowest energy possible, placing no more than two electrons in an orbital. The order of subshell filling is related to n, the principal quantum number, and , the angular momentum quantum number.
Ground state means that all of the lowest possible energy levels (up to the proper number of electrons for the element) are filled. Write a ground state electron configuration for these ions.

By “building up” from hydrogen, this table can be used to determine the electron configuration for any atom on the periodic table. We will now construct the ground-state electron configuration and orbital diagram for a selection of atoms in the first and second periods of the periodic table.
