Parsley—curly or flat-leafed—is an easy-growing, nutrient-packed herb, planted as both annual and biennial depending on climate. Type Herb. Lifespan Annual.
Parsley is a species of flowering plant in the Apiaceae or Umbelliferae family and is a close relative of other umbellifers such as carrots, caraway, parsnips, fennel, angelica, chervil, and dill. Native to the central Mediterranean, this herb has naturalized all over temperate Europe.
Start indoors six weeks before the last frost date in your area or plant in the garden when the soil can be worked. If you live in a hot climate, grow parsley as a cool-season annual. In the peak of summer, parsley may die, so it’s best to plant it in the fall for spring harvest in frost-free climates.
Compact and easy to grow from seed, parsley produces nutritious tangy leaves through summer and into autumn. It makes an attractive edging to veg beds and grows well in containers. Choose from curly- or flat-leaved types and use in salads, sauces and butters, and sprinkle over all kinds of cooked dishes.
