The first one represents Finnish sea areas simplified ice situation. The reference charts represent the normal ice situation of that time (2008–2022 median), last week´s situation, last year´s situation and the positions of the ice breakers.
There were more ice days than average in the Bay of Bothnia, the Quark and the northern Bothnian Sea, while there were clearly fewer ice days in the southern Bothnian Sea and the Gulf of Finland. Fresh water introduced to the sea by rivers and rainfall and saline water flowing into the Baltic Sea from the Danish straits cause density differences. Compared to surface currents, deep off-bottom flows are slower. In addition, their flow direction depends on local seafloor formations.
Despite the cold weather, the fast ice of the western part of the Gulf of Finland and the Archipelago Sea rotted. However, the lead on the Swedish side was closed in the second week, when the east wind pushed the ice momentarily to the west.
