A great indentation of the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico is almost completely surrounded by the United States and Mexico. The Straits of Florida, a strait that runs between the U.S. state of Florida and the island of Cuba, connects the gulf to the Atlantic.

The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world. It covers about 600,000 square miles with a total coastline measuring about 3,540 miles. It is an ocean basin which is partially landlocked.
The Gulf of Mexico covers approximately six hundred thousand (600,000) square miles making it the ninth (9th) largest body of water in the world. The Gulf of Mexico is home to four (4) endangered or threatened species of sea turtle.
