Habit (habit-tic) and somatic cough disorder (also known as psychogenic cough) is one of the more common underlying diagnoses eventually reached. Habit cough often follows an upper respiratory infection. It is a dry, repetitive, honking, disruptive cough. Habit cough (also called psychogenic cough, somatic cough syndrome or tic cough) most frequently affects school age children, usually those in later primary school or early high school, and boys and girls are equally affected.
Habit cough, which has been denoted by various terms, such as psychogenic cough and cough tic, is characterized by a loud honking or barking cough, disruption of normal activities, and frequent presence of secondary gain (such as school absence).
Coughing in children has a major impact on a child’s sleep, school performance, and ability to play. It may similarly disturb other family members’ sleep and can be disruptive for teachers and peers. Considerable parental anxiety is generated in families with a child that has chronic cough.
Contrary to the discussion of “somatic cough syndrome and tic cough” by the Expert Panel, habit cough is a definable and recognizable clinical syndrome. It does not require that these children undergo diagnostic and therapeutic trials to exclude all other causes of cough.
