26 Ιουν 2006 · Patient Presentation An 11-year-old female was referred to the pulmonologist with a several month history of daily coughing, that began after a cold. The cough occurred at least every 3 minutes with flares of coughs 3 times/minute. The cough is described as a dry “goose-honk.”.
Habit cough (also called psychogenic cough, somatic cough syndrome or tic cough) most frequently affects school age children, usually those in later primary school or early high school, and boys and girls are equally affected.
Contrary to the discussion of “somatic cough syndrome and tic cough” by the Expert Panel, habit cough is a definable and recognizable clinical syndrome. It does not require that these children undergo diagnostic and therapeutic trials to exclude all other causes of cough.
Habit cough is most commonly characterised by a repetitive loud barking cough that persists for prolonged periods. The cough interferes with normal activity and substantially decreases the quality of life. The sine qua non is the total absence of this troublesome cough once asleep.
