The Hagia Sophia remained a church for 916 years, but it was not always an Orthodox Christian church. From 1204 AD to 1261 AD it was the house of Roman Catholicism. The present shape of Hagia Sophia was completed by the Emperor Justinian on 27 th December, 537 AD. It was among the world’s largest domed structures and would serve as the prominent Orthodox Christian church for some 900 years. Hagia Sophia has served as the headquarters of Byzantine Empire from time to time.
