Head Start was launched in 1965 as a comprehensive child development program. Over the past 40 years, it has provided a beacon of hope and support to 22 million low-income children and their families across the United States and in territories outside of the United States.
Head Start Launch: On May 18, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially announces Project Head Start from the White House Rose Garden. Head Start launches in the summer of 1965, serving more than 560,000 children and families across America in an eight-week summer program through Head Start Child Development Centers throughout the United States.
16 Οκτ 2020 · History: 1965 to Today. As part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s ‘War on Poverty,’ Head Start was conceived based on the recommendations of a panel of childhood development experts who created the Cooke Report as a “blueprint” for what would soon become Head Start.
Launched in 1965 [3] by its creator and first director Jule Sugarman and Bernice H. Fleiss, Head Start was originally conceived as a catch-up summer school program that would teach low-income children in a few weeks what they needed to know to start elementary school. The Head Start Act of 1981 [4] expanded the program. [5] .
