  4. There are two ways that wounds heal: pri-mary intention and secondary intention, depending on the wound type and cause. The healing process is essentially the same for both, although the timescales may differ. Acute wounds – for example, those caused by surgery where there is minimal tissue loss – heal by primary intention.

  5. Although the process of healing is continuous, it may be arbitrarily divided into four phases: (i) coagulation and haemostasis; (ii) inflammation; (iii) proliferation; and (iv) wound remodelling with scar tissue formation. The correct approach to wound management may effectively influence the clinical outcome.
