- Atrial Tachycardia
Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a rapid abnormal heart rhythm that begins in the upper chambers of the heart. The atria are above the ventricles, hence the term supraventricular. The term tachycardia refers to a rapid heartbeat of over 100 beats per minute.
Medications may be used to treat many patients with SVT. Your doctor will discuss with you the most commonly used medications, the benefits and side effects. A special procedure called catheter ablation is available as an alternative to medication to treat many patients with SVT.
Episodes of SVT can be treated with medication (anti arrhythmic drugs and AV nodal blocking agents) or radio frequency ablation. In some patients these episodes can be prevented using vagal manoeuvres (physical manoeuvres involving the vagus nerve).
These medications are often prescribed to treat angina, high blood pressure, and irregular heart rhythms. They: † Block stress hormones and relieve stress on the heart’s pumping action † Relax the blood vessels so blood can move more easily † Improve the heart’s function † Reduce symptoms and lessen the chance of future hospitalizations
