On the night of December 2nd, 1984, a Union Carbide pesticides plant in Bhopal, India, began leaking 27 tonnes of deadly methyl isocyanate gas into the air. Local residents awoke in terror, eyes burning, lungs choked, searching in desperation for their loved ones as they attempted to flee the clouds of toxic vapour.
On the night of 2/3 December 1984, forty tonnes of methyl iscocyanate (MIC - a highly volatile toxic chemical) stored at a pesticide plant owned by Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), a subsidiary of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) became contaminated with water and other impurities.
Just after midnight on 2 December 1984, 28 tonnes of toxic gas were released into the community from a pesticide factory in Bhopal, India. Water entered a tank of MIC, an intermediate in the manufacture of pesticides, leading to a runaway chemical reaction and the release of a cocktail of highly toxic gases.
