Heligoland is located 46 kilometres (29 mi) off the German coastline and consists of two islands: the populated triangular 1 km 2 (0.4 sq mi) main island (Hauptinsel) to the west, and the Düne ('dune', Heligolandic: de Halem) to the east. Heligoland generally refers to the former island.

Under the Nazi regime, however, it was again made a naval stronghold and sustained severe Allied bombing toward the end of World War II. Before its destruction, the town of Helgoland extended from the Unterland to the Oberland, where the church occupied the highest point of the island.

During the Second World War, the National Socialists build bunkers and tunnels on the island. Warships and submarines are moored in the harbour. After the first devastating British bombardments on Heligoland in December 1939, a bunker system is built to protect the civilian population.
Operation Big Bang or British Bang was the explosive destruction of bunkers and other military installations on the island of Heligoland. The explosion used 7400 tons (6700 metric tons) of surplus World War II ammunition, which was placed in various locations around the island and detonated at 1 p.m. on 18 April 1947 by the Royal Navy.
