Itraconazole is also expected to be an effective treatment for dermatophyte infections and yeast dermatitis, but it may be cost-prohibitive in some cases.
The usual dose for dogs is 2.5 to 5 mg per pound (5 to 10 mg/kg) per day orally. The dose for cats is 5 mg per pound (10 mg/kg) twice daily which often works out to be about 50 mg per cat twice daily orally. It is common for fungal infections to require several weeks of treatment.
Depending upon the extent of the lesions and the severity of the symptoms, a yeast infection on a dog’s skin might be treated using topical (surface) treatments, systemic medications (usually oral) or a combination of both. Practical considerations also need to be taken into account.
