The History of the Oxford English Dictionary is the introductory volume to the Oxford English Dictionary, second edition (OED2), documenting the English Language for the last ten centuries.
These terms may be technical definitions (particularly from the medieval period), foreign words that have become part of the historical vocabulary (such as Ausgleich or Risorgimento), or recent terms and phrases that have not yet made their way into conventional historical works of reference.

Dictionaries are a recent invention. Human language, in a form that must have resembled modern languages pretty closely, has existed for at least 50,000 years, and it may have been developing in ways unique to humans for more than a million years.
It goes without saying that miscellaneous data does serve an instructional purpose for OED users, since it provides the reader with an easily apprehensible and accurate idea of the meaning of the term in history, as well as a large number of notes on derivational and compound terms, prepositional patterns and idiomatic expressions.
