History. Development. Keong Saik Road was once a red light area in Chinatown in the 1960s, but has since been transformed into a street with many boutique hotels. Under the Raffles Plan of Singapore, Chinatown originally was a division of colonial Singapore where Chinese immigrants tended to reside.
Chinatown’s physical development began from 1843, when more land leases and grants for homes and trade were awarded – particularly around Pagoda Street, Almeida Street (today’s Temple Street), Smith Street, Trengganu Street, Sago Street and Sago Lane.

The former Lai Chun Yuen opera house at the junction of Smith Street and Trengganu Street was built in 1887. Designed in the style of a Chinese teahouse, the building once had an 834-seat theatre and was considered the Broadway or West End of Cantonese opera in Singapore.
