This chapter provides an overview of the history of counseling psychology. A retrospective look at counseling psychology should help to tell us where we are from and illuminate the impact that social forces have had on what we do, where we do it, and who is permitted to do it.
To examine the roots of counseling psychology, in this chapter we describe both its establishment as a profession in the 1940s and how the profession has matured over time. Finally, we describe the continuities and changes of recent years that have resulted in a vigorous profession of counseling psychology for the 21st century and beyond.
