Counseling psychology emerged as a distinctive applied specialty within the American Psychological Association (APA) during the 1940s. Its formal recognition as a specialty by the APA occurred in 1946, marking a pivotal moment in its establishment as a recognized field of expertise.
Over the course of its history, Division 17 of the American Psychological Association (APA), now known as the Society of Counseling Psychology, has faced numerous challenges in clearly defining and refining its identity as a distinct specialty within the field.
To examine the roots of counseling psychology, in this chapter we describe both its establishment as a profession in the 1940s and how the profession has matured over time. Finally, we describe the continuities and changes of recent years that have resulted in a vigorous profession of counseling psychology for the 21st century and beyond.
