The latest crop of tablets--including the iPad, the JooJoo, the HP Slate (to name only a few)--springs from over two centuries of research and development, starting with Elisha Gray, whose 1888 "Telautograph" (U.S. patent No. 386,815) is believed to be the forerunner to the modern tablet.
There is a rich history behind them that dates back to almost five decades ago. Stay tuned as we briefly detail the history of these small PCs and the technological advancements that made them what they are today.

Tablets have become an essential part of modern-day life, but their history is relatively short. The first tablet computer was the Dynabook, developed by Alan Kay in 1968. However, it wasn’t until the introduction of the Apple iPad in 2010 that tablets became mainstream.
