The hooded seal or bladdernose seal (Cystophora cristata) is a large phocid found only in the central and western North Atlantic, ranging from Svalbard in the east to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the west. The seals are typically silver-grey or white in color, with black spots that vary in size covering most of the body. [3]
Hooded seals have a light gray to blue-gray coloration with irregularly shaped light or dark blotches. Male: Males exhibit a characteristic enlarged nasal cavity (hood) which is inflated for display during courtship and as an aggressive posture for defense.
The hooded seal is a relatively large seal, famous for its balloon-like nasal appendage. It has a small head, reaches up to 2.5 m in length and weighs up to 400 kg. Males are typically longer and heavier than females.
Hooded seals are migratory and follow a specific movement pattern every year in order to stay close to drifting pack ice. In spring, hooded seals concentrate in three locations: the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Davis Strait, and West Ice.
