6 ημέρες πριν · compact disc (CD), a molded plastic disc containing digital data that is scanned by a laser beam for the reproduction of recorded sound and other information. Since its commercial introduction in 1982, the audio CD has almost completely replaced the phonograph disc (or record) for high-fidelity recorded music.
In later years, the compact disc was adapted for non-audio computer data storage purposes as CD-ROM and its derivatives. First released in Japan in October 1982, the CD was the second optical disc technology to be invented, after the much larger LaserDisc (LD).
The story of the CD started way back in 1957 with experiments involving the rudimentary video disc by the Italian Antonio Rubbiani, that stimulated an entire generation of scientists to think along the lines of digital technology.
In 1877 "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was recorded and played on Thomas Edison's first experimental talking machine called a phonograph. About one hundred years (1982) after Edison's introduction of the phonograph, two companies, Sony and Philips, marketed the first digital audio 5-inch compact disc (CD).
