19 Δεκ 2019 · The bridges over the Chicago River are the city’s most iconic. But there’s much more to our history than the heavy, steel bascule bridges.
There’s a total of 37 movable bridges within the city limits. The earliest movable bridge in Chicago was a drawbridge at Dearborn Street built in 1834. Constructed of timber, it was similar to bridges found over moats at medieval castles, with large chains lifting it.
The DuSable Bridge (formerly the Michigan Avenue Bridge) is a bascule bridge that carries Michigan Avenue across the main stem of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago, Illinois, United States. The bridge was proposed in the early 20th century as part of a plan to link Grant Park (downtown) and Lincoln Park (uptown) with a grand boulevard.
Outer Drive Bridge, also known as the link bridge, is sitting across the Chicago River in Illinois. It is a double-deck movable bridge that once was the longest and widest bascule bridge in the world. While the lower level is totally used for vehicles, one can walk across the upper level.
The City of Chicago maintains thirty-seven moveable bridges. Thirty-two are on the Main, North, and South branches of the Chicago River; five are on the Calumet River. Downtown bridges open approximately 100 times a year from April to November.
