Masterpoints or master points are points awarded by bridge organizations to individuals for success in competitive bridge tournaments run under their auspices. Generally, recipients must be members in good standing of the issuing organization.
The aim of Master Points is to endeavour to indicate the true worth of a player. MPs won years ago are, therefore, worth less than those MPs won more recently. In other words, the capital of MPs of a player must diminish and, if not added to by new successes, will tend to disappear.
Most bridge sessions played at both club and tournament level of affiliated clubs, are played for Master Points. If you finish in approximately the top third of your field, you will receive Master Points.
How can I earn the different masterpoints at Newcastle Bridge Club? GREEN points are awarded in regular bridge sessions. RED points are awarded in special red point events that are listed in the Club Programme booklet. GOLD points are awarded in our Club’s GNOTS qualifying sessions and Regional final.
Master Point Ranks. A player’s accumulated holding Green and Local Points is expressed under the collective term of Master Points. The ranks of Premier Master and above require a specified number of the total points to have been converted from Green Points.
Master Points Regulations. The World Bridge Federation measures achievement in tournament play through the general concept of Master Points. Any player can obtain points from success in duplicate bridge competition, on a scale which varies according to the success itself, the size of the competition and its status. About the top one-third of players in a competition will be entitled to Master Points. The register of Master Points is kept at the offices of the English Bridge Union.
