The St. Lawrence River runs 3,058 kilometres (1,900 mi) from the farthest headwater to the mouth and 1,197 km (743.8 mi) from the outflow of Lake Ontario. These numbers include the estuary; without the estuary, the length from Lake Ontario is c. 500 km (c. 300 mi).

It is 740 miles (1,190 kilometers) long from the east end of Lake Ontario to Cape Gaspé. Here it empties into the 500-mile- (800-kilometer- ) long Gulf of St. Lawrence. The river forms 114 miles (183 kilometers) of the New York – Ontario border.
