18 Δεκ 2023 · More than 10 liters of blood loss may require a transfusion. Horses have eight major blood types—A, C, D, K, P, Q, U and T (the first seven of which are internationally recognized)—with more than 30 different factors for which they can be positive or negative.
Affected horses require increased sugar sources to maintain their blood glucose levels and are intolerant of high protein or fat in the diet. The diet should emphasize starch intake (grains or concentrates), though fiber sources (hay, beet pulp) are still necessary to avoid gastrointestinal dysfunction.
In horses there are 8 major blood groups: A, C, D, K, P, Q, U, and T. Of these, A, C, and Q seem to be the most likely to stimulate an antibody response when given to a horse that is negative for them.
There are numerous reasons why horses may require a transfusion, and when administered thoughtfully, at the appropriate time and in the correct way, blood or blood component transfusion can be one of the most readily accessible lifesaving procedures that a veterinarian can perform.
When would a gelding NOT be ideal? If they’ve previously received a blood transfusion! Middle-aged Older horses (>20 years old) often have lower red blood cell counts, or are more likely to have other comorbidities that will make them a less than ideal donor.
